Latest Everton News: Everton is considering a transfer swoop for Jake O’Brien as they prepare for Branthwaite’s exit

Jake O’Brien’s performances at Lyon have attracted the attention of Everton. The Merseyside outfit is considering making a move for the defender as they prepare for life without Jarrad Branthwaite. O’Brien has impressed since joining Ligue 1 and could be kept at Lyon for the rest of the season due to their relegation battle. Premier League, Serie A, and Bundesliga clubs are all monitoring the 22-year-old, who has made a strong impression as the first Irish player to feature in Ligue 1 for over two decades.

Everton is reportedly interested in O’Brien, although Lyon has stated they are not looking to sell the center-back in January. A summer transfer for the Cork City academy graduate seems more probable, with Lyon aiming to retain him until their top-flight status is secured. O’Brien had loan spells at Swindon Town and Belgian side RWD Molenbeek, as he did not feature in any senior games for his former club, Eagles. Lyon owner John Textor, who is also a co-owner of Palace, is unlikely to facilitate O’Brien’s return to Selhurst Park due to tension with fellow shareholder Steve Parish.

In the summer, Everton may seek a new center-back if they decide to sell Branthwaite, who could potentially fetch up to £100 million in the transfer market. Several European heavyweights, including Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Real Madrid, are reportedly waiting to make a move for the 21-year-old. This situation is further emphasized by Everton’s need to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, which may entail selling key players.
