Transfers for Liverpool, Man Utd, and Chelsea fell through due to medical issues and alleged dishonesty

Many times, deals for big-name football stars fall through at the last minute, enraging fans. Even after a fee has been agreed upon and personal terms settled, transfers can be scuppered due to failed medical exams, particularly with the exorbitant wages and clubs’ cautious investments. An example is Ruud van Nistelrooy’s transfer to Manchester United, which was first attempted in 2000 but failed due to a knee issue revealed in a medical. However, the deal was later successful and proved to be worthwhile for the club.

Radamel Falcao’s loan to Chelsea in 2015 also faced challenges due to his declining form and previous unsuccessful stint at Manchester United. A medical issue led Chelsea to terminate the agreement prematurely, but Monaco shouldered the rehab costs. Similarly, Liverpool withdrew from an £8.5million deal for Loic Remy in 2014 after a heart issue arose in his medical, but Chelsea took the gamble. Remy went on to win the Premier League title with Chelsea.

Nabil Fekir’s £53million move to Liverpool in 2018 was called off due to a medical snag, and he later moved to Real Betis for a significantly lower sum, missing out on Liverpool’s subsequent successes. In another case, Chelsea almost signed Arnautovic in 2009 for £12million before discovering a foot fracture, leading to a change of plans. Arnautovic eventually had stints with Inter Milan, Werder Bremen, Stoke, and West Ham.
