Danny Lennon, St Mirren manager

Last week saw new St Mirren boss Danny Lennon conduct a coaching session at Recreation Park for AM Soccerschool and I was lucky enough to have a chat with Danny during a break in proceedings.

After congratulating Danny on his appointment I asked him how he sees the job at St Mirren “It will be difficult I am under no illusion about that, but I am a firm believer that if you only have small targets that is all you achieve so I will be aiming for top of that bottom half anything above that is a bonus. Something that I held in high esteem at Cowdenbeath was a great team spirit, with a smaller club that is imperative, that is the only way you can compete with the bigger clubs. Craig (Brown) has done a fantastic job at Motherwell and that is where we should be aiming.”

I then asked if he thought that there was now a very definite divide in the SPL between the haves and the have nots? “Oh very much so, there is very little chance of the smaller clubs competing with the likes of the Old Firm over a season, however, the supporters can be assured that whichever eleven players I put out will all work 100% for each other, we will win as a team and lose as a team, we won’t be able to have a goal scorer that does that, he will have to help out his team mates and be prepared to get stuck in and pull his weight” “I feel I can get all my players playing at their maximum potential, it’s something I feel I am good at so I am looking forward to pitting my wits against the likes of Walter Smith and Craig Brown it’s a dream for a young manager like myself”

Finally I asked him about the chances for his former club Cowdenbeath, “It will be very hard for them but they won’t be anybodies pushovers, I managed to secure most of the players that were out of contract at the end of last season so they will have that important team spirit, if they can maintain that one for all and all for one mentality then anything is possible, I wish them all the luck in the world.”

Danny Lennon is nobody’s fool and is in no doubts about the task ahead, however, he is a young man with a great attitude and fantastic self belief, I for one can’t wait for him to start plying his trade in the top division here in Scotland it will be interesting to see just how far he can go.
